ABOUT US

Smarden WI was first formed in 1919 and this makes us one of the oldest WIs in the country - we may be old in foundation but definitely not in attitude!  To mark this event in 2019 we held a Centenary celebration in our beautiful  village hall.  The village hall is the heart of the community and we are fortunate to have this great facility as a meeting place.  Many of our members take an active part in the community and through this connection we support many local events.

In addition to our monthly meetings we form topical interest groups such as monthly walking, our book club, regular evening meals at local restaurants/hostelries, craft-making (eg Christmas/Easter decorations, jewellery, floral craft) and also have our own performing arts group (SWIPAG).  In addition, we organise monthly outings to town, country and coast.

Members are often willing to share any knowledge or new ideas that they have picked up amongst the rest of us, often in the form of small workshops for anyone who is interested. In summary; we are a friendly group who love to laugh and share our life experiences whilst engaging with exciting new ideas and working on projects together.

We acknowledge that everyone is gifted with talent, whether through wielding a paintbrush, being a competent needlewoman, cook, baker, jam-maker (or none of these!); possessing a listening ear, applying a friendly smile etc, etc.  Extrovert or introvert, we appreciate that there is something special in each individual and everyone brings something to enhance the group.  If you are thinking of joining us, please come along to our next meeting (every second Thursday in the month) - you are welcome to try us out for free.
